Welcome to Pennsylvania Western University!
With campuses in California, Clarion and Edinboro, PennWest serves Pennsylvania from Lake Erie to West Virginia. Our university is committed to the success of all students and accomplishes this through fostering meaningful partnerships that benefit all the communities that we serve.
PennWest is the second-largest public university in western Pennsylvania, an institution built on centuries of excellence and revolutionized in 2022 to serve the needs of a 21st century workforce. Our community of educators provide a learning environment where students thrive and achieve their educational, professional, and personal goals.
The achievements and contributions of our nearly 200,000 alumni are a testament to the enduring value of a PennWest education. Many of them live and work in Pennsylvania, and we are proud of the ways they enrich their neighborhoods, their towns, their counties and their regions.
Our students are at the heart of all that we do. At PennWest we are committed to providing a supportive environment and opportunities for growth. I invite you to join us as we move into the future. Together, we can share a sense of purpose that unites us and provides opportunities to learn, work and thrive.

Hello, PennWest!
As of today, we are one month – 28 short days! – away from welcoming our first-year students to our campuses for Welcome Weekend and the start of the fall 2024 semester.
This timeframe isn’t news to our colleagues in Enrollment Management, Student Outreach and Success, and Student Affairs, who have been working tirelessly all summer to grow our PennWest Class of 2028.
Thanks to them, our enrollment goals are within reach. While we still have work to do in August, overall headcount and FTE numbers are trending in line with budget projections. Early indications are that our undergraduate retention rate will increase over projections, and our graduate enrollment trends are very strong.
I want to thank each of you who led a campus tour, answered a parent’s question, led a New Student Orientation session, spruced up residence halls and other facilities, and in any way made it your business to help someone decide to enroll at PennWest. I’m excited to join the effort on Aug. 5, making personal phone calls to some who are still weighing their college decision.
In just the few weeks I have been on campus, I already know: Our people are the true power of PennWest. You are what makes the second-largest public university in western Pennsylvania feel like home.
As we look to the start of classes on Aug. 26, work continues to get our campuses ready for students. Great progress continues to be made on our strategic infrastructure plans on each campus. The new turf that was installed at Edinboro this summer is just one tangible sign of our commitment to the student experience – and a reminder that fall and the fall sports season are nearly here.
I’m excited to root for the Vulcans, Golden Eagles and Fighting Scots and experience fall traditions on each campus -- even as we continue our work to enhance the power of PennWest.
I’m grateful for all that you do.

Hello, PennWest!
This week a faculty member at PennWest Clarion invited me to be a guest speaker at a book club. It was a welcome invitation, as I love to read and I’m new in town; I happily accepted. The thing about book clubs is that at the heart of each of them is the beginning of good conversation. This past week the conversation I’ve begun stretched across many miles and entered many new communities. Each conversation created new insights and clear reminders of all the reasons I, along with thousands of students, faculty and staff, chose PennWest.
I’ve told a few people about lunch with my wife, Kristy, and son Bryce at Don Patron in California this week, and most people know it well. It was new to us, but as soon as I mentioned it, I quickly realized that it is part of the fabric of this college town, and one we’ll return to many times in the years to come.
My wife and I have reflected on our stop at St. Joseph Parish’s July 4th Celebration in Lucinda, Pa. – we felt at home and are so grateful it will color our collective memory of this first week in western Pennsylvania.
Every stop is still an exploration.
I met with our Strategic Enrollment Management team at RLA, before heading to Harrisburg for the PASSHE Board of Governor’s meeting on Thursday. I am pleased to report that our enrollment numbers are as budgeted, a result of the energy and hard work of the team. One of the reasons I chose PennWest is because the fiscal plan and Blueprint for Success utilizes smart business planning and real budgeting to ensure expectations can be met and PennWest is on solid financial footing into the future.
I’m new in town, but I’ve already learned many important things, and things that may not be important but will certainly be useful, like the ins and outs of I-79! I intend to keep listening as much as I can as I learn more about the people and places that make our region special.
I knew the structure and geography of PennWest before I joined the team, but I’m so happy to get to know the unique culture of each campus. I’ve never been afraid to put miles on my car. As I continue this conversation with our PennWest family of students, staff, faculty, alumni and the communities we call home, I hope that I can remove the physical space between us by utilizing this digital space to continue our conversation.
I’m looking forward to meeting each of you along the way. Join my digital conversation @PennWestPresident on Instagram.

In our first week, my wife, Kristy, and our son Bryce have been warmly embraced by this amazing community of educators, students, and community members. We have experienced each community's natural inclination to provide a hearty western Pennsylvania welcome!
This week, as we traveled across each of the PennWest campuses, we experienced an up-close glimpse of what makes this region so special. On the California, Clarion and Edinboro campuses, we experienced a palpable sense of inclusion and an instantaneous feeling of belonging.
As I begin my time as the president of PennWest, I am honored to lead the second-largest public university in western Pennsylvania, with you. In one short week, I have begun to feel that the power of PennWest is in its people – and in this special place we now call home.
Wednesday evening, as we celebrated Independence Day alongside thousands of community members on the Edinboro campus, we quietly celebrated our family’s next chapter. We can sense that new roots are forming that are grounding us here.
We look forward to seeing you around campus and across our social media channels. Please keep informed by following @PennWestPresident on Instagram. I am excited to continue our conversations and look forward to the work we will do together.
